Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (W.H.M.I.S.) is Canada’s national standard for hazard communication with the newly integrated Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals. This system is designed to classify and identify workplace chemical hazards in a consistent manner. It provides information to workers and employers about hazardous substances used at work. There are three ways that hazardous material information must be disclosed under WHMIS.

Ontario:

  • The Occupational Health and Safety Act imposes duties on employers who manage workplaces where hazardous substances are used. This includes the need to obtain safety data sheets and labels from suppliers, and to offer worker education programs.
  • The WHMIS Regulation, Ontario Regulation (644/88 now R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 860) was in effect from October 31, 1988. This regulation outlines in detail the duties of employers with respect to labels, material safety data sheets, and worker education. It is mandatory to get WHMIS certificate in Brampton.
